Sometimes it's the smallest part that takes down the whole system. That's exactly what happened here - a failed EEV stepper motor on a Trane unit had the system completely unable to keep up with cooling demand. No ice, no comfort, just a house getting warmer by the hour.

The EEV - or electronic expansion valve - controls how refrigerant flows through your system. The stepper motor is what drives it. When that motor burns out, the valve can't regulate refrigerant properly, and your AC either underperforms or quits altogether. It's not a part most homeowners have ever heard of, but it's critical.

You can see the internal damage on the pulled motor - the components inside are visibly burned and degraded. That kind of failure doesn't happen overnight. It's usually the result of the part running under stress for a while before it finally gives out completely. By the time the system stops cooling well, the motor is already done.

We got the faulty motor swapped out and the Trane system back to running the way it should. The fix itself is straightforward once you've correctly diagnosed the cause - and that's really where the skill is. Misdiagnose it, and you're replacing parts that don't need replacing while the real problem stays hidden.

If your AC is struggling to keep up or cycling oddly, don't sit on it. These kinds of component failures tend to get worse, not better, and waiting usually means more damage down the line.
